Junghans Max Bill Chronoscope Bauhaus - 27/4409.02

Bold and unmistakably modern, the Junghans max bill Chronoscope Bauhaus (ref. 27/4409.02) wraps a Bauhaus-inspired chronograph in matt black. Luminous dots mark the hours on the matt black dial, black hands carry red inlays alongside a red-tipped seconds hand, and the 30-minute and 12-hour counters sit beside a date display in perfect, minimalist order.

The 40mm stainless steel case wears a matt black PVD coating and stands 14.4mm tall beneath a domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal. On the reverse, a partially transparent Bauhaus motif on the five-screw case back reveals the self-winding J880.2 caliber, which offers up to 48 hours of power reserve without the chronoscope function running. Paired with a black leather strap and a matt black PVD-coated buckle and water resistant to 5 bar, this automatic chronograph turns a design tribute into a statement piece.

Timepiece History

Junghans was founded on April 14, 1861, in Schramberg in Germany's Black Forest, when Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law, Jakob Zeller-Tobler, set up a firm making parts for large Black Forest clocks; the first complete Junghans clocks followed in 1866. By 1903, Junghans had grown into the largest clock manufacturer in the world, and in 1918 it completed its nine-level terrace building, the Terrassenbau, which today houses the Junghans Terrassenbau Museum. Owned by the Steim family since 2009, Junghans remains based in Schramberg today.

Max Bill trained at the Bauhaus, the school founded more than a century ago, and his work with Junghans began in 1956. Table clocks came first, in 1958, and in 1961 Bill designed Junghans' first line of mechanical wristwatches, still produced in nearly the same form today. The Bauhaus models in the line borrow their red details from the doors of the Bauhaus building in Dessau, which Junghans says would have caught Bill's attention on his first visit, while the partially transparent case back frames the movement within a Bauhaus motif. Here that tribute is set in matt black PVD.
